Brussels (ANSA) – According to the European Commission, X (formerly Twitter) is violating EU rules on digital services (Dsa) with deceptive interfaces, lack of transparency on advertising, and insufficient access to data for researchers. The results of the investigation conducted – a note reads – have now been sent to X so that the company can defend itself against these accusations.
Brussels believes that the so-called verified accounts with the blue check mark on X are not actually verified and thus represent a deceptive practice towards users. This, the Commission specifies, is because anyone can sign up to obtain such verified status. “There is evidence of malicious individuals – reads the note released by Brussels – who abuse verified accounts to deceive users.”
From the investigations conducted, it also appears – according to the Commission – that Elon Musk’s company does not comply with EU rules on digital services also regarding the transparency criteria required concerning advertisements disseminated through its social network. At the same time, the former Twitter does not allow adequate access to public data by researchers, and in this case too, does not therefore comply with the provisions set out in the Dsa.
In the event that the accusations against X are confirmed even after the confrontation with Musk’s company, the European Commission could impose financial penalties up to an amount equal to 6% of the annual global turnover of the former Twitter (July 12).
