Brussels – The European Union announced on Wednesday the disbursement of a first tranche of 150 million euros, as part of an emergency aid of 400 million euros to the Palestinian Authority facing severe budgetary problems.

The European Commission specified that this first tranche included grants to help pay the salaries of civil servants in the West Bank and support vulnerable families. 

The rest of the funds will be released in August and September, “subject to progress in the implementation of the Palestinian Authority’s reform agenda,” explained the European executive in a statement.

The authority is facing a financial crisis that has worsened since the start of the war in Gaza, as Israel has increased its retention of tax revenues intended for the Palestinian territory.
