Brussels – The European Commission has approved the inclusion of honey under the name Istrian honey/Istrian honey, produced in the Istria region in Slovenia or Croatia, in the register of protected designations of origin.
“The variety and richness of the region and the combination of pollen give the honey special organoleptic characteristics, which are reflected in its unique tastes and smells,” the commission explained their decision.
Istrian honey includes several types of honey – acacia, sage, chestnut, floral, forest, savory, and linden. All stages of production, grazing, extraction, and packaging of honey must be carried out in a specific geographical area in Istria.
The procedure for protecting the name began in August 2017 at the joint initiative of the Croatian Beekeepers Association Lipa and the Slovenian Coastal Beekeepers Association Koper.
Thus, Istrian honey joined more than 3600 registered agricultural products that already have protected designation of origin. Previously, Slovenia, together with Croatia, had already protected Istrian prosciutto, Istrian olive oil, and Istrian cattle meat – boškarin. (July 5)
