Brussels – Economist Martin Kahanec has been appointed as the first Slovak member of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA) of the European Commission (EC). He will provide independent scientific advice to European Commissioners on various topics, including political issues, thereby improving the quality of legislation in the European Union (EU). TASR reports this according to a press release from the Central European Labour Studies Institute (CELSI).
The GCSA consists of a maximum of seven advisors selected based on their expertise. Kahanec was nominated by the Slovak Economic Society. He was elected for a three-year term, which can then be extended for another two years.
“This appointment is a personal honor for me, but also a recognition of the inspiring academic communities of which I am a proud member – within CELSI, the University of Economics in Bratislava, CEU in Vienna, as well as in the broader European and international academic space. I look forward to contributing to the development of evidence-based policies and highlighting the importance of social sciences in addressing the most pressing challenges of our time,” Kahanec stated.
According to the RePEc database of economic scientific publications, Kahanec has long been the most productive economist working in Slovakia and is among the top nine percent of economists in Europe. He is also a member of the Government Council for Science, Technology, and Innovation. His work primarily focuses on economic policy, labor economics, migration, and economic inequalities. (May 21)
