Brussels – The German far-right party AfD announced on Wednesday that it had formed a new group in the European Parliament bringing together 25 MEPs from eight states and whose French MP from Reconquest Sarah Knafo is one of the three vice-presidents.
The formation of the “Europe of Sovereign Nations” comes after the constitution on Monday of another radical right-wing group, which counts 84 MEPs notably from the National Rally (RN) and Viktor Orban’s Fidesz, called “Patriots for Europe” and chaired by the Frenchman Jordan Bardella.
“The Europe of Sovereign Nations” has two co-presidents, René Aust, from the Alternative for Germany (AfD), and Stanislaw Tyszka, from the Polish far-right, Konfederacja.
The AfD had been excluded from the ID (Identity and Democracy) group during the previous legislature, pushed out by the RN due to, among other things, suspicions of closeness with China and Russia. (07.10.2024)
