Skopje – The protection of cultural heritage, including the restoration of the central building of the “Post of North Macedonia” in the center of Skopje, as a building of cultural and architectural significance, were among the topics of discussion at the meeting between the Macedonian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski and the EU Ambassador to the country, David Geer.
Representatives from the Ministry of Culture also attended the meeting, announcing that attempts will be made with EU support to reconstruct and protect this building, as well as put it back into operation.
– The neglect of cultural heritage has led to this degree that buildings which are of cultural and architectural importance to us remain unprotected. We will not tolerate that. Today’s meeting with EU Ambassador Geer was precisely in this direction, to restore and protect the damaged building of the central Post office as a building of cultural value in the history of Macedonia. This will not be an easy endeavor, nor a cheap project. On the contrary, it will require a lot of energy, time, and above all professional knowledge as well as serious funds. However, the central building of the “Post” is of enormous historical and cultural significance for Macedonia as one of the most significant buildings from the time of brutalism and must be protected in its basic form and put into function, Nikoloski said.
The central building of the “Post of North Macedonia” in Skopje was seriously damaged by a fire that engulfed the building in January 2013. The complex is an architectural work of the well-known Macedonian and Yugoslav architect Janko Konstantinov (1926-2010), built in 1974. The fire destroyed the original surface of the dome, the frescoes – the work of academic painter Borko Lazeski, as well as the equipment and lighting in the main counter hall of the “Post”. (August 8)
