Bratislava – The Office of the President of the Slovak Republic received a petition with signatures from citizens on Tuesday, which was submitted by the petition committee represented by Matúš Alexa. This was confirmed to TASR with the statement that the submission will be dealt with in accordance with the law. These are sanctions that Slovakia adopted as an EU member state.
On February 24, 2025, on the third anniversary of the start of Russian aggression against Ukraine, the EU Council adopted its sixteenth package of sanctions against Russia, which also targets actors responsible for circumventing EU sanctions. The restrictive measures, which the EU gradually introduced over three years in response to actions that undermine or threaten Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence, currently apply to over 2400 individuals and entities.
Alexa, who delivered the petition, is active in the civic association Motorcyclists of Slovakia – Brother for Brother. The petition concerns an appeal to the government to cancel the sanctions against the Russian Federation.
“We have accepted the submission and will handle it in accordance with the law,” stated the communication department of the president’s office to TASR. “We have no other similar petitions on record,” they added.
The association Brother for Brother announced on social media that it will conclude the collection of signatures for the petition calling for the lifting of anti-Russian sanctions on Tuesday.
Through the petition, it calls on the government to use all competencies “for the purpose of abolishing all sanctions, restrictive measures, and other limitations in financial, economic, international law, but also cultural, sports, as well as in other areas of public life that are directed against the Russian Federation, as well as individuals associated with the Russian Federation”. The organization claims that the sanctions against Russia harm the interests of Slovakia. (March 11)
