Interparliamentary and interinstitutional cooperation is essential in advancing Albania on its path to European integration.

In Albania, the Speaker of the Assembly called a meeting with the heads of the country’s independent institutions, including those of Justice, to discuss deepening cooperation with the aim of advancing reforms related to EU integration.

Present at the meeting, EU Ambassador to Tirana Silvio Gonzato said that the negotiations will consist of fundamental reforms that will bring Albania up to European standards in areas such as public administration, statistics, public procurement, and financial control.

He emphasized the importance of Parliament and independent institutions in the context of EU accession.

“Albania has entered a critical phase on its path to EU membership and is currently working very quickly to open negotiations for essential clusters related to the functioning of democratic judicial institutions, freedom, security, and other essential areas, which are the backbone of the entire structure, such as public administration reform, statistics, public procurement, and financial control,” Gonzato said.

He said that in Parliament, European integration should be considered by all political forces as a strategic national priority, first for Albania and its citizens. On the other hand, he said, interinstitutional relations should be in full respect of the Constitution regarding checks and balances.

Regarding the Justice Reform, according to Gonzato, Parliament can play a key role in preventing the rollback of reforms to further consolidate implementation in harmony with all the obligations that Albania has on its path to the EU. And these reforms, he added, are accompanied and complemented by efforts to prevent corruption and organized crime and corruption in the government. (September 27)
