Prague – In light of the current global political situation, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for an expansion of nuclear energy. “When it comes to our energy, we need to generate our own energy,” she said at the Globesec Security Conference in Prague. This requires more energy generation from renewable sources, more nuclear power, and more efficiency.
As an argument for her demand, von der Leyen specifically mentioned the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. “With Ukrainian cities, many of our fundamental security assumptions lie in ruins,” she said. For decades, many people have argued that economic interdependence is the true source of security, and Europe has bought Russian gas. “That was supposed to guarantee that Moscow would never start a new war on the old continent,” von der Leyen said. “But that was a fallacy.”
Whether she also considers a return to nuclear power in Germany to be advisable, the CDU politician left open in her speech. Currently, countries such as France, Hungary, and Poland are working on expanding nuclear energy in the EU. In Germany, the last nuclear power plants were shut down in April 2023. (September 1)
