Bratislava – Meetings of the three highest constitutional officials or party leaders of the governing coalition could become regular to jointly seek harmony in crucial areas for Slovakia. This follows a statement by the new president Peter Pellegrini for TASR. He also wants to invite opposition leaders to the palace. He would welcome it if he eventually managed to get representatives of the opposition and the coalition to one table at a suitable time.
“I would be glad if I could invite the three highest constitutional officials or party leaders of the governing coalition, who hold real power and responsibility for the functioning of the country, to the palace for discussions and consultations on some crucial issues facing Slovakia,” he said, adding that the three highest constitutional officials could meet regularly at a certain protocol level. He wants them to strive together for harmony in attitudes in some areas, as was the case in the past.
He will be pleased if opposition politicians accept his invitation to the presidential palace. “I promised that I want to be president of everyone. It is fitting for the president to communicate with the leaders of parliamentary opposition parties as well,” Pellegrini noted.
He has the ambition to continue organizing round tables, as he and his predecessor Zuzana Čaputová announced after the attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD). “Whether I manage to get everyone to the table at least once or twice, time will tell,” he noted. However, according to him, it will probably be possible only when the prime minister’s health condition allows it.
At the end of this week, the president will again represent Prime Minister Robert Fico at the EU summit, which, in addition to the usual work agenda, also focuses on selecting candidates for the highest positions in EU institutions. (June 22)
