Brussels – The EU Commission has launched a formal investigation against Tiktok.
The internet giant is suspected of not having lived up to its commitments before the first round of the presidential election in Romania.
“After serious indications that foreign parties influenced the election in Romania through Tiktok, we are now thoroughly investigating whether Tiktok has violated the EU Digital Services Act (DSA),” writes Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a press release.
The suspicions include, among other things, that Tiktok may not have done what is required in terms of preventing risks and in the handling of political advertising and paid material.
The first round of elections in Romania was marked by a sensational rise for the pro-Russian far-right candidate Calin Georgescu, who quickly gained millions of followers on platforms such as Tiktok.
Since then, the result has been annulled and the election round is to be redone in the spring of 2025.
Tiktok and Russia have previously denied all allegations of involvement in the Romanian election.
