BRUSSELS- The President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, will present the structure and portfolios of the next composition of the EC to the leaders of the European Parliament on September 17 in Strasbourg, announced European Parliament deputy spokesperson Delphine Colard. On the social network X, Colard stated, after the media reported that von der Leyen had postponed the presentation of the new EC until next week, that, at the request of the EC, the presentation of the structure and portfolios of the EC will be held on September 17 at 9:00 AM in Strasbourg. She emphasized that the EP is ready to open the hearing process for confirming the candidates for commissioners.
Colard added that a meeting of the EP Conference of Presidents, which consists of the EP president and the leaders of political groups in the EP, will take place tomorrow in Brussels, and that the EP leaders will discuss and finalize the draft agenda for the EP plenary session from September 16 to 19. Earlier today, Politico reported, citing three unnamed officials, that von der Leyen postponed the announcement of the portfolio distribution among the candidates for 26 commissioners in the new Commission until next week. Von der Leyen was supposed to meet with the leaders of political groups in the EP tomorrow morning, after which it was expected, according to media reports, that she would announce the composition of the next Commission.
Slovenia confirmed on Monday that former ambassador of that country, Marta Kos, will be its candidate for European Commissioner, after Tomáš Vassel withdrew his candidacy, but the Slovenian parliament has yet to sign off on this change. All 26 candidates for commissioners must be approved by the European Parliament, and the next European Commission is expected to start working on December 1. (September 10)
