In May 2024, EU member states adopted the Artificial Intelligence Act, a landmark piece of legislation that is the first in the world to set standards for regulating the field. In this video, the European Newsroom (enr) takes a closer look at the technology and how the EU will regulate it.

Brussels – On 21 May 2024, EU member states gave the final green light to the Artificial Intelligence Act, the bloc’s law to regulate a rapidly advancing technology.

The AI Act regulates artificial intelligence according to the risk it could pose to humans, and defines which systems are considered ‘high-risk’ AI and whether or not they can be used. Prime examples covered by the law include the generation of images, videos, texts – as well as systems capable of manipulating human behaviour and those conducting real-time remote biometric identification in public spaces.

In this video, the European Newsroom explores the vast possibilities of AI, looks at the pros and cons of the technology, and discusses the EU’s landmark regulation, which has not crossed the finish line without opposition along the way.

The enr also produced a Key Story on the law’s adoption, which you can read here
