Sweden has been invited to join a European port cooperation with six other countries.
The cooperation between the countries takes place parallel to the cooperation that is already ongoing at the EU level.
“The countries have for a long time formed a sort of inner circle in the work against organized crime,” says Gunnar Strömmer (M), Minister of Justice.
Sweden has asked to participate and has now received an invitation.
The coalition against organized crime – as the cooperation is called – is a deeper cooperation between the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy. The main purpose is to combat crime and drug smuggling through ports.
According to Gunnar Strömmer, Sweden’s entry makes it easier for prosecutors, customs, and ports to share information with their European colleagues.
“We are geographically close to each other and we see that the drug traffic coming to Sweden largely occurs in contexts with these countries. Now we can bring our authorities closer together,” he says.
