Brussels – Sweden, Germany and France called on the European Commission to increase its support for the European battery industry at an EU ministerial meeting in Brussels on Thursday.
“We are basically drowning European competitiveness in not only a lot of regulation but also regulation that is a maze,” Swedish Industry Minister Ebba Busch told journalists on the sidelines of the meeting.
Along with the German and French representatives, Busch called on the commission to ensure good working conditions for the existing battery industry.
Strong European battery industry important for automotive industry
Germany’s representative, State Secretary Bernhard Kluttig, said that a strong battery industry in Europe is extremely important for the German automotive industry.
Busch added that alongside supporting new battery companies, the European Union should also help existing companies to massively expand their production and capture a fair market share.
She said Europe’s economy was being crushed in an industry war between the United States and Asia.
Sweden’s battery industry is suffering, with the financially struggling Swedish manufacturer Northvolt recently filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US.
Many in Europe were hopeful that Northvolt’s production of batteries for electric cars would provide a much-needed boost to the European automotive industry. (November 28)
