The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced today that the EU intends to tighten some of the existing sanctions and impose additional ones against Tehran in response to the “brutal repression” of anti-government protests in Iran.
Expressing Europe’s full solidarity with the protesters who are “risking their lives” demanding “freedom for themselves and future generations” and recalling that “the EU has already imposed extensive sanctions against Iran,” the President of the Commission states in a post on the X platform: “we are proposing a ban on additional exports of critical technologies for drones and missiles.”
Ursula von der Leyen adds that, together with the head of European diplomacy Kaja Kallas, “we are also preparing new sanctions in response to the ongoing and violent repression of protesters by the regime.” (20/1/26)
