Paris – Marine Le Pen, leader of the French far-right, challenged on Friday President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to reappoint Thierry Breton as European Commissioner, continuing her showdown with the Elysée on the Prime Minister’s prerogatives in the event of cohabitation.
“It is the Prime Minister’s prerogative to appoint the European Commissioner(…) It is obvious that Mr. Breton did not defend France’s interests during his term,” she said on Europe1/Cnews.
Emmanuel Macron wished for Thierry Breton’s reappointment before his liberal allies Thursday in Brussels, according to European sources. During a press briefing later, Mr. Macron explained that the proposal of the French Commissioner would come “formally” later. But he highlighted “the experience and qualities” of Mr. Breton.
Commissioner for the Internal Market since 2019, Thierry Breton has established himself as a prominent figure in the Brussels executive by tackling the abuses of power by tech giants. (28.06.2024)
